100th ANNIVERSARY OF LOCAL 254

Local 254 welcomes you to our 100th anniversary

BREAKING NEWS

Local 254 would like to thank sponsors of the  UA Local 254 2010 Golf Tournament Sponsorship

It is with an enormous amount of pride that UA Local 254 is declaring that this year, 2010, we celebrate the Centennial year of our Local Charter.  For 100 years our members have assisted our unionized contractors in the construction of this great City of Winnipeg, Province of Manitoba, and have worked side by side with United Association members and other union trades right across Canada.  They have endured all weather conditions and have always gotten the job done to the highest standards.

United Association Local 254 is honoured to celebrate its centennial year by hosting members from across Canada who will be travelling to Winnipeg to attend the 2010 Canadian Conference.  Activities are planned for the enjoyment of all attending as well as those from Local 254.  All will have a great time.

Local 254 began when twenty-one Plumbers and Steamfitters applied to the United Association in 1900 and were issued their first Charter, then known as Local Union 62.  As Local 62, the Union grew considerably but not without difficult times, sacrifice and controversy.  Shortly thereafter, Local 62 disbanded but in March 1910 the loyal members of the Union were awarded a new Charter known as Local 254; a Plumbers Local Union.  The Steamfitters then applied and were awarded Local 332.  During WW1, with a shortage of manpower, the Steamfitters surrendered their Charter and became members of Local 254.  This is how the history began and continues as we reach our 100th Anniversary and beyond.

The Local now boasts of having over 1200 members; all pipefitting trades with their numerous Agreements; has a developing Training Centre and has jurisdiction on both sides of its Provincial boundaries.  There are six full time staff members including the elected officials as well as numerous part-time employees.
