Steps to Becoming an Apprentice within the Union

Step 1

To become an apprentice within the union there are a few criteria to meet:

  •   Write a mechanical aptitude test.
  •   Bring in your grade 12 transcript or G.E.D. at the time of writing the aptitude test.
  •   Present a current resume.
  •   Complete application forms.

The testing dates are written approximately once every 4 months. The test consists of 100 multiple choice questions. The passing grade is 70%. If your mark is below 70% there is an option to take a 2nd test.  This  is a math based test; it is equivalent to a Grade 10 math level.  A score of 70% or higher is also needed to advance further. This test is also written approximately once every 4 months.

A file will then be made with your information and added to the Applicant files.  To determine the order in which applicants are placed is based on the date the test was written and all pertinent paperwork was completed.

Step 2 – this is the process taken when a contractor is looking for apprentices.

  •  A contractor calls requiring a 1st level apprentice.
  •  A list of applicants and their information will be sent to the contractor, if accepted the contractor may request an interview.

*The contractor has the right to make the final decision as to which applicants will be hired*

  •  If an applicant does not gain employment within 6 months the file will be archived.
  • Once employed by a company you are required to come to the Union office to complete the required forms and to make the following payments:

  1. A payment of $50.00 made out to the Minister of Finance (payment must be in the form of a cheque or money order) is required.
  2. Part initiation fee of the amount of $25.00 is also required. This is to be made to the Local 254 (payment can be cash, cheque, debit and all major credit cards) At this time you will fill out an application to become a permit within the Union. The total fee to be initiated into the union is $250.00.

Once these steps are completed you will then be issued a referral slip that you will have to provide to the onsite Shop Steward or Foreman or the appropriate person. The referral is to be presented to the Local 254 when making the $25.00 payment.

*Please note you are not considered a union member until you are employed with the Local and have paid the initiation fee*
