Steps to Becoming an ApprenticeSteps to Becoming an Apprentice with P.I.T.C Steps to Becoming an Apprentice within the UnionStep 1 To become an apprentice within the union there are a few criteria to meet:
The testing dates are written approximately once every 4 months. The test consists of 100 multiple choice questions. The passing grade is 70%. If your mark is below 70% there is an option to take a 2nd test. This is a math based test; it is equivalent to a Grade 10 math level. A score of 70% or higher is also needed to advance further. This test is also written approximately once every 4 months. A file will then be made with your information and added to the Applicant files. To determine the order in which applicants are placed is based on the date the test was written and all pertinent paperwork was completed. Step 2 – this is the process taken when a contractor is looking for apprentices.
*The contractor has the right to make the final decision as to which applicants will be hired*
Once these steps are completed you will then be issued a referral slip that you will have to provide to the onsite Shop Steward or Foreman or the appropriate person. The referral is to be presented to the Local 254 when making the $25.00 payment.
*Please note you are not considered a union member until you are employed with the Local and have paid the initiation fee*
