DEATH ANNOUNCEMENTS: #413

With deepest sympathy we must inform you of the passing away of the following UA Local 254 Member:

Brother Charlie Lohr a retired Journeyman Pipefitter and a Member of 41 years, died March 18, 2010, at the age of 79.

Gordon Earl Young was a member at Local 254 and then transferred to Local 170, Vancouver. He had kept strong roots with Local 254 and had many friends in our Local over the years.

Gordon Young died on January 14, 2010. He had 50 years of service in the United Association as a Plumber/Steamfitter and was 75 years old at the time of his death. There will be a memorial service on May 15, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at the Army and Navy on 3584 Portage Avenue in Winnipeg.

GENERAL NEWS:

Negotiations for our main Mechanical Agreement are ongoing, and we will be meeting again on April 28th and 29th, tentatively. I will also be in Sprinkler Negotiations during the week of April 19th to 23rd.

Reminder to our membership: nominations for the election of Officers will be on May 13, 2010. The ballots will be mailed out on May 20, 2010, and will be counted on June 21, 2010. The breakdown of Officers to be elected are as follows:

 1 – Business Manager
 1 – Business Agent
 1 – President
 1 – Vice President
 4 – Executive Board Members
 3 – Finance Committee Members
 1 – Recording Secretary
 1 –Inside Guard
We are also sending a friendly reminder to our members who work on Travel Card out of Province, to make sure your monthly dues and yearly Death Assessments are kept up to date. It is your responsibility to make sure you keep yourself in good standing. I know when working in other jurisdictions that dues are taken off your payroll. It is not, however, allotted to your monthly dues back at your home Local.

WORK SITUATION:

The work situation should be picking up shortly with a large shut-down starting at Koch Fertilizer. This shut-down should begin in June. There are two stations for TCPL starting this Spring as well.

Saskatchewan continues to take more members with the Co-op Up-grader and numerous Potash Mines expanding. We have approximately 80 members working in their Province.

PITC OPPORTUNITY:

We are currently seeking applications from members who would be interested in the Administration and Training Department duties of Piping Industry Training Committee of Manitoba. We are looking for a background in Plumbing, Steamfitting, Sprinkler and Refrigeration. This individual should also have a good working knowledge in computer literacy and good skill-sets on how to set up budgeting and curriculum. Good communication skills, both written and oral are necessary. We will be compiling an eligibility list of successful applicants and work from that list in the future.

SOCIAL NEWS:

Please see the attachment.

With best wishes, I remain,

Fraternally yours,

Heiko Wiechern
Business Manager and
Financial Secretary
